JFed Volunteers Rise to the Occasion

On Sunday, October 21, The Jewish Federation held its fifth Community Service Day of 2012! Over 120 dedicated volunteers participated in projects across the city that related to food security, sustainability and helping others in need.

At Project Chicken Soup, we prepared and delivered kosher meals to people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses. At Grow Native Nursery, we planted California native wildflowers to support the nursery’s efforts in environmental sustainability. We also learned about the nursery’s work with veterans, who are trained in valuable horticultural skills to better equip them for future employment opportunities. At the JFS{SOVA food pantry, YALA (the Federation’s young adult group) sorted and organized a portion of the thousands of pounds of food donated during the pantry’s recent High Holiday food drive. Over at Union Rescue Mission in Downtown LA, we cooked and served a meal to residents, and learned first-hand about the services the Mission provides. Finally, volunteers prepared the garden at Holy Nativity Church for the winter season, ensuring that the vegetables and herbs grown there will continue to be donated to the LAX food pantry.

Thank you to all of our volunteers who made this day so special! See below for photos of our volunteers working hard and giving back.

We hope to see you at our next Community Service Day on December 2nd!  To be placed on our volunteer e-mail list, please fill out our short volunteer sign-up form.  And don’t forget to check us out on Facebook!
