As I envision the future of the Jewish community, I see one in which everyone, no matter their ability or disability, is fully participating in Jewish life. That is why inclusion of people with special needs is a key communal issue our Federation is committed to addressing. We have and will continue to support the continuum of special needs services in Los Angeles through our HaMercaz program, as well as its strong network of interconnected programs, in order to ensure that Jews with special needs – as well as their parents, siblings, grandparents and other caregivers – are able to experience and celebrate our shared values, history and traditions.
I am proud of the work we have accomplished in the community, but I know there is more that must be done to support this growing population. For one, we must make sure that there are Jewish engagement opportunities for people with disabilities of all ages within our Jewish communal institutions. This is why our Federation, in collaboration with HaMercaz, the Board of Rabbis and the BJE, is hosting the Better Together Conference on February 29th – at which professional and volunteer leaders from synagogues, schools, camps and youth groups will map out strategies for implementing inclusive programming within their respective organizations.
There is also much work ahead in order to meet the changing needs of an aging special needs population, focusing on issues related to housing, financial, vocational, and legal safety nets. Our Federation, along with the aforementioned HaMercaz network, is working to develop strategies for the years to come, and we foresee programming and services that will enable adults with special needs to be productive, contributing members of the Jewish community.
Even with all of our challenges, I am amazed at what our community has achieved and I encourage you to learn more about the incredible programs available in the Jewish community for people with special needs. Visit one of the special needs programs by volunteering at one of the community service projects on February 12th as part of our Federation’s Super Week, or contact HaMercaz for information on any of the multitude of programs available to the community. You can also take our Federation’s Inclusion Pledge as a reminder that each one of us has a role to play in creating a supportive, welcoming community. Whatever you do, please remember that there is a place for everyone in the Jewish community.
