Federation Impact Update — August 2024

Helping the youngest in our community learn and expand their thinking is one of Judaism’s most sacred values. Young people will soon return to classrooms and lecture halls all over the city. Our August Impact Update is about our community putting the value of teaching the young into action.

PREPARING JEWISH COLLEGE STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS
ON CAMPUS

Our Campus Impact Network (CIN) brought together 60 rising college freshmen and their families for a College Pre- paredness Briefing earlier this month. At a moment when parents and students are concerned about the climate on campuses nationwide, we recognized the urgent need to provide insight, tools, and support for them. Current college students, alumni, campus professionals, and representatives from Jewish communal organizations from all over the city provided valuable insight to help empower students so they can thrive on campus, successfully build alliances, and find opportunities to experience Jewish joy on their college journeys. More than 20 Jewish organizations and synagogues partnered with us for this critical event.

WELCOMING OUR NEWEST BRAWERMAN FELLOWS

We engage promising Jewish students to ensure a bright Jewish future through our Brawerman Fellowship, which provides college scholarships for young people from the Los Angeles area to attend colleges across the country. In mid-August, Fellows from the Class of 2028 got to know each other — and upperclassmen Fellows — at our annual summer retreat. During two action-packed days, the Fellows participated in leadership development workshops and volunteered at the Safe Place for Youth Community Garden. They also learned about confronting antisemitism on col- lege campuses, transitioning to college, and networking. Everybody left the retreat energized and better prepared to make an impact on their various college campuses.

STARTING YOUNG JEWISH PROFESSIONALS ON THEIR LEADERSHIP JOURNEY

Our Community Leadership Institute (CLI) helps turn young Jewish professionals into future leaders of Los Angeles. In late August, our sixth CLI cohort came together for the first time during their opening retreat. This year’s edition of CLI includes 42 CLI talented and passionate Jews from all corners of the city, bonded by their commitment to inten- tional community building. The group took part in sessions to deepen their “why” and tell the story that drives their leadership, as well as a session to better understand their communication style. After the weekend, participants felt inspired, motivated, and enthusiastic about each other and the new leadership skills they will put into action during the 12-month CLI experience, and beyond.
