Morocco has been a welcome haven for Jews for hundreds of years, but our Federation’s involvement with the JDC in Morocco began in the 1940s, when we provided critical assistance to Jews fleeing Nazi Europe. Today, the country boasts a vibrant Jewish community that is coexisting peacefully with a predominantly Muslim population. It is home to over 20 active synagogues, three Jewish social clubs and several kosher restaurants. But despite the Jewish community’s comfortable standing, we are still providing support to our Moroccan brothers and sisters in need.
Though our work, we are ensuring that Morocco’s least fortunate Jews, particularly the elderly, receive critical medical services and basic daily necessities to live their lives with dignity. We also help fund Jewish homes for seniors that offer high-quality care, safe lodging and nursing services for those who are unable to take care of themselves.
In addition to assistance for the elderly, we are making it possible for Moroccan Jews of all ages to receive both regular and emergency medical care through the Ose Clinic. Check out the video below to hear how the JDC’s Valerie is helping care for Jews in need through her work with Ose:
We are also ensuring the Jewish future in Morocco by helping fund two Jewish school systems where over 500 children receive an education each year. Our support guarantees that there are special classes for children with learning disabilities and provides a scholarship fund for tuition assistance and school supplies for needy and low-income families. In response to current events around the world, we are even helping maintain security at these Jewish schools as well as several Jewish institutions throughout Morocco.
