Federation Impact Update — December 2021

Building a Strong Coalition to Fight Anitsemitism

We are a stronger Federation and Jewish community when we have committed and powerful allies in our fight against the rising threat of antisemitism. Led by our incoming President & CEO Rabbi Noah Farkas, our community engagement team recently created a powerful communal Hanukkah candle-lighting gathering with prominent local elected officials including the Mayor of Los Angeles and a diverse coalition of civic partners. The program, which was also part of a national campaign called Shine A Light, advocated for religious tolerance and mutual support of diverse faiths and communities in Los Angeles today. Our partners joined us in firmly committing to calling out and combating antisemitism and all forms of hate.

CULTIVATING A MOVEMENT OF DIVERSE JEWISH LEADERS

Now more than ever, we need a vibrant network of emerging leaders to help us solve the complex challenges facing the L.A. Jewish community today and for the next 50 years. Applications recently opened for two of our dynamic programs that transform socially conscious young Jewish adults into our next Jewish leaders. First, our Community Leadership Institute (CLI) is a premier Jewish leadership development program for passionate individuals committed to expanding and leveraging their capacity for impact across Jewish L.A. Featuring a strategically developed curriculum, hands-on experiential learning, mentorship, and an immersive trip to Israel, participants graduate with an understanding of how to lead change across Jewish L.A. through philanthropy, nonprofit board service, and community partnerships. Second, our Rautenberg New Leaders Project (NLP) is a program where participants meet and learn from elected, civic, and community leaders to understand critical challenges facing our city. Together they develop their leadership skills and build strong and lasting relationships with other future Jewish leaders who share a passion for civic engagement and social change.

PROVIDING DYNAMIC JEWISH COMMUNITY EXPERIENCES

Our Federation is building a strong Jewish community by providing Jewish families with unique Jewish experiences. Many families in our community are at the beginning of their Jewish journeys, unsure how to connect to Judaism and what their Jewish family life is going to look like. Our PJ Library Family Camp provides support and a framework through which they can experience lasting and joyful Jewish life. In partnership with the Shalom Institute, we recently brought together 28 families at Camp Ramah in Ojai for our first in-person Family Camp Retreat since the start of the pandemic in March of 2020. Participants felt the joy of a special immersive Shabbat experience and participated in programs such as Israeli dancing and Jewish-themed arts and crafts. Parents also learned useful skills from our parenting expert to help guide their children through the ongoing pandemic and beyond.
