Mother and Daughter Lions

The International Lion of Judah Conference is an exciting opportunity to hear world-class speakers on local and global Jewish issues. The Conference brings together women — Lions — from all over the world who are passionate about making their voices heard, making a difference, creating real impact to make this world a better place, and ensuring the Jewish future.

Marcia Schulman and Lisa Dick, an inspiring mother and daughter Lion duo, will be attending the International Lion of Judah Conference (ILOJC) together. Marcia has been a Lion for 11 years and has attended the ILOJC once before. This year is Lisa’s first as a Lion, and this year’s Conference will be her first. We met with Marcia and Lisa to learn what inspired them to become Lions and what they are most excited about at the upcoming Conference.

What inspired you to become a Lion? What does it mean for you to be a Lion?

Marcia: “I feel it is my responsibility as a Jewish woman to stand up and support our community in my own name. My mother-in-law Esther Schulman was a Lion for as many years as I can remember. She was extremely involved and an inspiration to the entire community. My daughter Teri was a Lion and this year my youngest daughter became a Lion for the first time.”

Lisa: “My mom and sister have been supporters at the Lion level in the past. I am glad to be able to support the Federation at this level as well.”

What impact has being a Lion had on your life?

Marcia: “I think of it as a responsibility because I am able to do so. In the Jewish community, we value tzedakah and giving back. Being a Lion is an expression of that tzedakah.”

Lisa: “As I am new to being a Lion, I look forward to new experiences with the group in the future. By attending the ILOJC, it is an exciting time to dive right in!”

What would you tell others who are thinking of becoming a Lion and/or attending the Conference?

Marcia: “I have always felt that giving is a very personal decision, but if someone asked for my opinion, I would say that it is a wonderful and enriching opportunity to spend time with your daughters.”

What are you most looking forward to at the upcoming September Conference?

Marcia: “Well, of course for me, the opportunity to have shared time with my beautiful daughter.”

Lisa: “I am looking forward to spending time at the Conference with my mom and getting to know other women who have been involved with the Federation for many years in a meaningful way. To be honest, I don’t really know what to expect and that in itself is something I am looking forward to — a new adventure and hopefully finding impactful ways to be involved in the Jewish community with other women.”

Lion of Judah recognizes all women who make a gift to our Federation’s Annual Campaign in their own name of $5,000 or more. As part of an international organization that connects us to Lions around the world, all Lions can proudly wear a striking gold or platinum pin, highlighted with diamonds or rubies, marking their increased commitment to the work of our Federation.
