Our Federation’s Lions of Judah is an incredible group of philanthropic, committed, and dedicated women that is making an impact on our communities, here and abroad. The upcoming International Lion of Judah Conference presents an opportunity to highlight some of these Lions. Read our interview with Heidi Bendetson below and stay tuned for more!
Heidi recently became a Lion of Judah and will be attending her first International Lion of Judah Conference this month! We sat down with Heidi to ask what inspired her to join this amazing group of women.
How are you involved with The Jewish Federation?
“Before recently becoming a Lion, I was introduced to the work of the Federation through Lori Klein, Federation’s Senior Vice President, Caring for Jews in Need. Lori advised me and my program partner and friend Stacy Sharf on a project we started here in L.A. to screen for Jewish genetic diseases.”
What inspired you to become a Lion?
“I draw inspiration from the many wonderful women I know who have been involved at this level, starting with my rock star BFF Stacy and my mentor Annette Shapiro, with whom I am fortunate to serve on the Executive Board of Beit T’Shuvah. There are many other active women who I admire and enjoy getting to know. I look forward to working with all of them as a Lion. I like nothing more than working with strong, hard-working, caring, fun, kind, creative, driven, and philanthropic people.
It is a huge added bonus that, in this case, they are women. I know the power of a group, and I look forward to being a part of what can and has been accomplished by this particular group of women.”
What would you tell others who are thinking of becoming a Lion?
“I would relay the Margaret Mead quote my parents lived by and raised me to believe: ‘Never doubt that a group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.’”
What are you most looking forward to at the upcoming September International Lion of Judah Conference?
“I am definitely looking forward to witnessing the pride of Lions and the widespread reach of the organization. I know that will be awe-inspiring. I can’t wait to hear all of the incredible speakers, tour our nation’s capital, and share information, ideas, and cocktails with all of these incredible women!”
Lion of Judah recognizes all women who make a gift to Jewish Federation Los Angeles’ Annual Campaign in their own name of $5,000 or more. As part of an international organization that connects us to Lions around the world, all Lions can proudly wear a striking gold or platinum pin, highlighted with diamonds or rubies, marking their increased commitment to the work of our Federation.
