On November 12th, nearly 400 generous women showed their support for the work of our Federation at Sylvia Weisz Women’s Philanthropy’s L’Dor V’Dor Luncheon. The annual event is always inspiring and this year was over the top!
Hollywood was in the house when guest speaker Jill Soloway was interviewed by her friend, Federation President & CEO Jay Sanderson. The creator of Amazon Studios’ Emmy® award-winning series Transparent and co-founder of The Jewish Federation’s community partner East Side Jews shared her lifelong connection to Judaism and unique personal story. Gayle Weiss made a moving and gracious acceptance of her honor of the Doris Factor Women’s Leadership Award. The coveted award is given in appreciation of long-standing dedication and leadership of our Federation’s Women’s Philanthropy and the L.A. community.

The luncheon began with a welcome by L’Dor V’Dor Chair, Dana Simon, followed by L’Dor V’Dor Outreach Co-Chairs Ziba Mansoury & Joanna Taitz who led the motzi. Then Co-founder and Executive Director of JQ International Asher Gellis shared his moving story of self-discovery as a gay Jewish man, inspired to create the organization he now leads — and how our Federation’s partnership with JQ International has made Jewish life more inclusive for the Los Angeles LGBTQ community.
Sylvia Weisz Women’s Chair Heidi Monkarsh made her last appeal in support of our Federation. Reading from her journal, she shared an impassioned recount of how her commitment to Jewish community, which began on a Federation-sponsored trip when she was 15, ultimately brought her to lead the Jewish women of Los Angeles so effectively for the past two years.
From the excited greetings in the lobby of the Beverly Wilshire ballroom before the event to the lingering conversations by old friends and new as it ended, this luncheon once again proved that the women of Sylvia Weisz Women’s Philanthropy are a force to be reckoned with!
L’Dor V’Dor, from generation to generation, is our Sylvia Weisz Women’s Philanthropy event to introduce friends to our Federation, engage first-time supporters, and connect women from across the generations in our community to each other and to our life-changing work.
