Daniel Like is a junior at the University of Southern California studying Psychology. He participated in Onward Israel Los Angeles with 35 other L.A.-based students this past summer, interning at the Marshal Blindness Center. Daniel shared his experience with us.
For me, participating in Onward has been an experience like no other. I was able to feel what it is like to be an Israeli in Tel Aviv, one of the most amazing cities in the world. I worked in the Marshal Blindness Center and was able to assist with the emotional support of elderly individuals who lost their vision over time and help children with blind parents. I learned the stories of dozens of elderly Israelis and helped provide them a second home at the center. I enjoyed going into work every single day because I knew that each day, while challenging, would be very insightful because of the inspiring individuals with whom I was able to interact.
However, Onward would not have been the amazing experience that it was without the friends I made and the location of the living arrangements. I made friends with incredible people from Los Angeles. Our entire group bonded and connected with each other, such that we all went out together to restaurants, bars, and the beach. I know that all of us will be meeting up in Los Angeles.
The apartment location was perfect. Two blocks away from the beach, 10 minutes to the famous Carmel Market, seven minutes to Dizengoff Street, and close to delicious food options and bars. We were in the center of all of the action in Tel Aviv, and that made for a very immersive experience.
Onward is an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. I would highly recommend this program to anyone, as participating in Onward and living in the heart of Tel Aviv is an amazing opportunity for personal growth, making new friends, and furthering career development.
