Jewish Federation Los Angeles proudly announces the inaugural Brawerman Fellows of The Geri & Richard Brawerman Leadership Institute. An elite group of five high school seniors were chosen following an extensive interview process, and each will receive a $10,000 annual college scholarship and participate in a program that will build their leadership skills and further strengthen their connection to Jewish life.
Meet the 2012 Brawerman Fellows:
The Brawerman Fellows were selected based upon demonstrating academic strength, financial need and a commitment to leadership, community service and Jewish engagement. They will be mentored, participate in a shabbaton, benefit from yearly one day retreats, go on an identity-strengthening Birthright Israel trip, and participate in hands-on community service for four weeks during the summers, locally and in Israel.
The 2012 Brawerman Fellows:
- Josh Cahn, Culver City High School, attending the University of California, Berkley
- Leigh Evans, Milken Community High School, attending the University of California, Santa Barbara
- Mitchell Handler, Venice High School, attending the University of California, Berkley
- Evan Lowell, Cleveland Humanities Magnet High School, attending Boston University
- Harmony Richman, Santa Monica High School, attending Barnard College
The Geri & Richard Brawerman Leadership Institute was established with a multi-million dollar gift from community leader Geri Brawerman on behalf of herself and her late husband Richard – the largest gift in the history of Jewish Federation Los Angeles – making it possible for our Federation to develop and sustain a talent pool of engaged Jewish young leaders in perpetuity.
“The Fellows we’ve chosen represent the finest young leaders in our community,” says Geri. “It is extremely gratifying to be able to make this unique program possible. If Richard were here, he would have been thrilled to meet these amazing young people. I’ve personally gotten to know them and am excited that they will be leading our community in the future.”
