The theme of freedom was brought to life on Sunday, March 31 by Federation volunteers at the second Community Service Day of 2013! Just several days after Passover, with themes of freedom still on people’s minds and hearts, over 120 volunteers participated in four programs across the city as a part of this special day of service.
At Santa Monica Beach, volunteers, including those participating in the Federation’s YALA program, helped clean the sand to ensure that every piece of trash was picked up, especially those small items that often get overlooked but still pose a danger to ocean life and our environment. This was the first of our Federation’s three volunteer beach clean-ups as part of Heal the Bay’s Adopt-A-Beach program. At the Federation building, we replanted The Federation’s onsite community garden for the upcoming growing season and learned expert gardening practices to take home to our own gardens. The produce we grow will be donated to Global Kindness, a pantry that provides food and household items to those in need. At the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, we honored the memories of those who perished during the Holocaust and heard first-hand from a survivor. Finally, in Hollywood, we cooked and served lunch for 30 homeless clients through the PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) Cooks program.
We thank all of the incredible volunteers who made this Community Service Day so very special! See below for photos of our volunteers working hard and giving back.
