Sunday, July 13, 2014: Dawn Mine from Millard Canyon
RATING: Intermediate TRAILHEAD TIME: 9:30 A.M.
DESCRIPTION:
This 5.6 mile loop hike with 1600 elevation gain/loss will include multiple stream crossing along with boulder hopping and maneuvering through other obstacles. We will follow the Sunset Ridge trail into Millard Canyon. Once inside the Canyon the trail becomes sporadic till we get to Dawn Mine which we will explore. Trail is mostly shaded. We will go into the mine, which consists of two tunnels, high enough to walk straight up for the most part. There is normally a waterfall (depending on rainfall) in one of the tunnels and we may have to go into the water about one to two feet deep in a couple of small places for those who would like to go inside the mine. We will have lunch by the old gold mine, and return. No toilets at trailhead.
WHAT TO BRING:
Bring a towel, a headlamp, and a pair of water sandals for exploring inside the mine. Also bring two liters of water, lunch, snacks, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, hiking boots or shoes with good traction, daypack, hiking poles/sticks, shorts and a T-shirt or long pants and long sleeved shirt, depending on weather. Clothes should be loose fitting, and light-colors are preferable
FOOTWEAR: Hiking boots or shoes with good traction. Absolutely no sandals or open toed shoes. Bring a pair of water shoes for exploring inside the mine along with a headlamp and a towel.
