We interviewed YALA Board Member Warren Coughlin to find out why he decided to join and support YALA and what he’s doing this summer (aside from counting down the days until the Summer Soiree).
What inspired you to join the YALA Board, and what do you enjoy about being a member of the Board?
I’ve always tried to give back by being involved in hands-on volunteer work or board positions for various organizations — some educational, non-profit, religious, etc. Out of all the groups I associate myself with, the YALA Board is one that stands out by focusing on execution. The work the group does has a real impact on the community and makes a big splash. I joined with close friends and have enjoyed a lot of flexibility in curating unique donor experiences that involve some of my favorite things: food, wine, and art.
What has been a YALA highlight for you so far this year?
The highlight was a few weeks ago at the YALA Run Club perimeter jog around UCLA. For the most part, the people who show up are familiar faces from other events, with a couple of new runners depending on location. A handful of new people came to the last run — two of them hadn’t seen each other since elementary school! It was awesome to be a part of the reconnect.
What are you most excited about for Summer Soiree?
The fruit guy: I hear he is world renowned, and I am very excited about meeting him and trying the fruit.
What is your favorite part of summer or favorite thing to do in L.A. in the summer?
Being from the East Coast, I feel like it’s summer time all year round in L.A. — although surfing is not enjoyable any other time of year outside of June-Sept. I’m looking forward to moving on from the Costco 8-ft. striped foamie to a shorter board.
