Sunday, August 17, 2014:  Mount Baldy via The Devils Backbone trail  (Ski lift + hike)

 

 

Rating:  Strenuous.                                Trailhead Time:  8:00 A.M.

 

Description

We will take the ski lift (open chair lift; fee $12 roundtrip if purchased online at the following link below; otherwise it’s $25 if purchasing it there) to the mountain station of Mount Baldy (7,800), where we will begin our hike.  We will hike the Devils Backbone trail to the summit of Mount Baldy at 10,064.  This is the highest point on the San Gabriel Mountains.  We will return the same way via the ski lift.  There are spectacular views of both the San Gabriel and the Antelope valleys from the mountain.  Hike is 6.4 miles round trip.  Be prepared for variable weather.  We may have an early dinner at a local restaurant after the hike.  Plan your car pools accordingly.

What to bring
Two liters of water, lunch, snacks, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, hiking boots or shoes with good traction, daypack, hiking poles/sticks, shorts and a T-shirt or long pants and long sleeved shirt, depending on weather.  Clothes should be loose fitting, and light-colors are preferable.

 

Footwear:  Hiking boots or shoes with good traction. Absolutely no sandals or open toed shoes.

 

 

WEST SIDE Pico Blvd Carpool: 6:05 A.M. Leaving 6:10 A.M.    

Meet at the municipal parking lot on the south side of  Pico Blvd west of Robertson blvd between Robertson blvd and Livona ave next to B Nai David Congregation 8906 Pico Blvd L.A. 90035. Form your own carpool and please share the cost of transportation and parking, if any, with the driver.

Directions

Take I-10 E. After 8.6 miles keep right to continue onto CA-60 E.  Follow the signs for Pomona / I-5 S / Santa Ana.  After 11.5 miles take the exit onto 605 N then after 8.2 miles exit onto 210 E / Foothill Fwy towards Foothill Fwy / San Bernardino.  Continue on CA 210 E for 7.8 miles and exit at Base Line Rd where you will turn left then after 0.2 miles make the first right onto Padua ave and drive 1.8 miles.  Turn right onto Mt. Baldy Rd and travel 10 miles until you reach the end of the road by the ski lift where we will meet.

Valley carpool:  6:10 A.M. LEAVING 6:15 A.M.
Meet in Sherman Oaks at the corner of Riverside Dr and Hazeltine Ave (between Woodman and Van Nuys Blvd).  Meet on Riverside Avenue on the south side, across from Trader Joes and Stansbury avenue at the driveway entrance to the Sunkist building located at: 14130 Riverside Dr, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423.   Form your own carpools and please share the cost of transportation and parking, if any, with the driver.

Directions:

Fwy 101 E to Fwy 134E to Fwy 210 E, to Base Line exit.  Left at the light on Base Line Rd, right on N Padua Rd, to Mount Baldy Rd.  Go through Mt. Baldy Village and continue to the end of the road by the ski lift where we will meet.

CONDITIONS TO PARTICIPATE!!!! 

Please allow plenty of time flexibility when participating in our hikes / activities!

If you are unsure of your fitness level please join us on one of our easier hikes before doing any advanced hikes. We would recommend that you can walk at least 6 miles before coming on any of our hikes.

It is not appropriate to RSVP for an event and not show up. Members can be terminated for repeated offenses.

 

Please read the description of the event carefully before attending.

 

I am a volunteer (i.e. not liable for the group). Safety is a priority for everyone in the group. Think of this as hiking with a group of friends.

 

DISCLAIMER:   Outdoor sports and other events we plan are inherently dangerous and requires significant physical exertion.  Participants must be good health free from heart and respitory problems and be in good physical shape.  Accidents may happen and you understand that on these outings, there may not be search and rescue, medical facilities or expertise necessary to deal with medical or other emergencies to which you and your dependent may be exposed.. The Jewish Outdoor Adventures and its organizers are not trained leaders and we do not confirm the qualifications of any of its members to lead or participate in trips. The Outings may include carpooling, transportation, or transit to and from the Outings, and you are  personally responsible for all risks associated with this travel.  However, even though the carpooling is recommended, it is not mandatory.

 

RESPONSIBILITY: I am not responsible for you. You are responsible for you and your minors. You should be self-sufficient and be able to find your way to safety in the event you find yourself on your own. I will not lead you back to the trailhead if you decide to turn back.

ASSUMPTION OF RISKS: You, for Yourself and for the minor participant, if any, ACKNOWLEDGE AND ASSUME the risks of the activity in which your or your child will be participating, whether or not those risks are described above and whether they are inherent or otherwise.

 

RELEASE OF LIABILITY: All participants take full responsibility for their own actions. If you choose to participate in any The JOA events, you are releasing the Jewish Outdoor Adventures  and it’s organizers from all liability in case of possible injuries, death including loss of or damage to property.
