Bringing a Nobel Prize Winner’s Words to Life: Isaac Bashevis Singer and His Artists

The Bell Family Gallery of The Jewish Federation is pleased to announce the opening of an inspiring new exhibition titled Isaac Bashevis Singer and His Artists. On display from July 17-December 19, 2013, this intriguing showcase highlights the works of 17 renowned artists whose drawings accompany the timeless novels and stories of Jewish Nobel Prize-winning author Isaac Bashevis Singer.

Born in Warsaw, Poland, Singer immigrated to the United States in 1935, and although his stories were translated to English, he always wrote and published in Yiddish. His works most often depicted the vanished world of Polish Jewry, blurring the lines between folk tales, legends and the harsh reality of human survival.  In all, he published 86 books and numerous stories that continue to delight people of all ages and backgrounds to this day.

The illustrations selected for Isaac Bashevis Singer and His Artists represent 25 of the author’s novels and short stories.  The exhibition not only brings the departed author’s treasured tales to life, but it also preserves a poignant piece of Jewish history and is sure to touch all who attend.

Featured artists include:
•    Ira Moskowitz
•    Raphael Soyer
•    Larry Rivers
•    Maurice Sendak
•    Irene Lieblich
•    Eric Carle
•    William Péne Du Bois
•    Leonard Everrett Fisher
